Natural 'a b/c' Fractions

DreamCalc Pro has a powerful [a b/c] fraction key which allows you to enter values as natural fractions. In addition, it will convert ANY decimal value to natural fraction representation.

Entering Fractions

If you want to enter a proper fraction, in the form integer + numerator/denominator, use the [a b/c] key twice between values, for example:

{1} [a b/c] {1} [a b/c] {3} [=] 1.3333...

If you wanted to enter an improper fraction, for example 4/3, use the key only once:

{4} [a b/c] {3} [=] 1.3333...

Converting Decimals to Natural Fractions

When you press the [a b/c] key, if the value you have entered contains a decimal point or is the result of a previous calculation, the decimal value will automatically be converted to a natural fraction. Why not try this with the value of PI? The PI constant is located on the [EXP] button, so you would key in:

[CONST] {PI} [a b/c] giving 3 : 16/113 (aprx)*

An 'aprx' indication will be shown when the fraction cannot be represented precisely, and it is thus an approximate conversion. You can modify the precision of decimal to fraction conversions by changing the 'Max Denominator' setting in the Options Window.

Converting to Improper Fractions

You can convert any number, whether it is in decimal, proper fraction or DMS form, to an improper faction at any time by pressing [d/c].

For example:

{PI} [d/c] gives 355/113 (aprx)*

* Assumes a 'Max Denominator' setting of 1,000.
